Minecraft starter house tips

The first house is a tool. It keeps the night out and holds a bed. It does not need a tower.

Build the smallest plan you will actually finish before dark. In the Blocksmith gallery the starter set is the small and medium houses: 11 of them. A few of the smaller ones:

Put the door on the ground floor, the bed against an inner wall, and a chest where you can reach it without walking through the build. Add a crafting table and a furnace before you decorate. Light the rooms. In current Minecraft: Java Edition, hostile mobs need complete darkness to spawn, so a torch by the door and one in each room is the usual first night.

Leave a chest of cobble and wood outside the plan. The material list on a house page is what that particular build used. Your survival chest will not match it block for block, and that is fine. Use the list as a shopping list when you want that shape, or place the datapack if you would rather have the shell now and rebuild it honestly later.

Steps

  1. Pick a small plan. Open a small house page and read the block count before you start. If it is thousands of blocks, it is not a first-night house.
  2. Mark a flat 7 by 7 or so. Odd sizes keep a door in the middle. Don’t dig the floor out until the walls exist, or you will be standing in a hole at dusk.
  3. Walls, roof, door, bed, light. In that order. A missing roof is how a skeleton joins you. A missing bed is how you respawn outside.
  4. Only then, storage and a farm. The survival guide is the next evening: a farm, a mine, and a chest that is not your only chest.

Interior, at this stage, means a floor you can see and a corner that is not a hole. Medieval and modern decoration can wait until you have spare blocks. The house ideas page splits those looks. How to build a house is the longer version of the shell itself.

Questions

What size is small in this gallery?

Height 16 or under, or the small stock plan. Medium runs up to about 30, or a parts plan at its usual size.

Should I use the datapack in survival?

You can. It places the shell where you stand. Some players would rather mine the blocks. The material list supports that. Either way it is not a mod.

Where is the interior guide?

Keep the first interior to bed, light, chest, crafting, furnace. A second room is a later project, not a requirement for living through the night.
