How to make Minecraft pixel art
Drop a picture you have the right to use. Blocksmith turns it into blocks, standing up or lying flat.
Most picture tools hand you a map item. Blocksmith builds a wall or a floor, then installs it like any other build. The sunset in the gallery was drawn for that page: it is not a photo we took from someone else. Its page lists the width and how many kinds of block it used.
Bring a drawing, a crop of something you made, or a chart you have rights to. Don’t drop in a film still, a logo or a picture of a person who has not agreed.
Steps
- Choose a picture you can use. PNG, cropped to the part you actually want. A busy photo at a tiny size becomes noise.
- Pick wall or floor. A wall is a mural. A floor is a mosaic you walk on. The preview is the time to change your mind.
- Let it match and dither. Hue stays put, so red does not slide into orange wool. Dithering spreads the error across neighbours so a gradient survives.
- Build it with the datapack. Same install as a castle. It can also rise course by course. It will not become a map item.
If the deliverable is a map, use MapartCraft and read why we say that. The Blocksmith tool is pixel art.
Questions
Is the picture uploaded?
It is read on your computer. A 3D build from a photo is a different button, an AI wish, 13 and over, and only if you choose it.
Can I get a block count first?
The preview shows the grid before you commit. The sunset page is an example of the dimensions being written down after a real conversion.
Does this work on Bedrock?
Picture builds follow the build path. Use the Bedrock behaviour pack when you need the blocks on Bedrock. The map-art workflow is not this tool.
Mac and Windows. On a Mac, Blocksmith is notarised by Apple and opens normally. On Windows, the installer isn’t code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may say “Windows protected your PC”: choose More info, then Run anyway.
