BLOCKSMITH

Blocksmith and MapartCraft.

Both turn a picture into Minecraft blocks. MapartCraft’s specialty is the map item. Blocksmith builds a picture you can walk up to.

MapartCraft has been the usual answer for map art for years. You give it an image, you pick a palette and a size in maps, and it produces the schematic or the commands for maps that look like the picture when you hold them or hang them in item frames. The constraints are the map’s: a fixed resolution, the colours a map can show, and a workflow that assumes you know what a map is. If that is the object you want, MapartCraft is the specialist, and Blocksmith does not out-specialize it.

Blocksmith’s picture tool makes a grid of real blocks, as a wall or as a floor, and installs it with the same datapack path as a castle. You crop in the app, you see the blocks before you build, and dithering is there so gradients survive. It is the right output when the picture should be architecture: a mural, a floor mosaic, a sunset behind a dock. The sunset gallery page is a small one, with its real dimensions.

Use MapartCraft when the deliverable is a map. Use Blocksmith when the deliverable is blocks in a world, especially if you also wanted a skin or a build in the same sitting. The picture has to be one you are allowed to use, in either program.
