How to install a texture pack on Java

Java calls it a resource pack. Blocksmith can switch it on, or you can drop the folder in yourself.

A Blocksmith pack is a folder of original PNGs plus pack.mcmeta. It is not a recolor of the textures that shipped with Minecraft, and it will not contain those files. The gallery has 56 of them, each with the palette written on the page.

On a Mac, the resourcepacks folder lives in your Minecraft folder inside Application Support. On Windows it is inside the .minecraft folder. The launcher’s “Open resource pack folder” button is the reliable way to find it. You should not need a mod loader.

Steps

  1. Export the resource pack. In Blocksmith, save the Java pack. The app can also switch the pack on for the world you are using.
  2. Or copy it into resourcepacks. Put the pack folder, or the zip, in the resourcepacks folder. pack.mcmeta should be at the top of that pack, not buried two folders down.
  3. Enable it in Options. Options, Resource Packs, move the pack to the selected side, done. Water and lava animate. If the game says the pack format is wrong, export again for the version you are playing. Don’t edit the format number by guessing.
  4. Put it back. Select the pack and remove it. The game’s own textures are still there, because Blocksmith never overwrote the game’s files.

Questions

The pack does not appear in the list.

You are probably in the wrong folder, or pack.mcmeta is nested. Use the launcher’s resource pack folder button and look one level down.

Will this replace my other packs?

Only while it is selected, and only for the textures it includes. Remove it to return to the game’s look.

Is this allowed on a server?

A resource pack changes what you see. Servers can also push their own pack. This one is local unless you choose to upload it, and you should only upload art you have the right to, which in this case is the pack you generated.

Mac and Windows. On a Mac, Blocksmith is notarised by Apple and opens normally. On Windows, the installer isn’t code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may say “Windows protected your PC”: choose More info, then Run anyway.
