Blocksmith and Nova Skin.
Nova Skin is where you paint a skin or start from a library. Blocksmith is where a sentence becomes a skin file on your computer.
Nova Skin (novaskin.me) is a long-running skin editor in the browser. You can draw on the 64 by 64 layout, you can start from skins people have published, and you can download the PNG. If you already think in pixels, or you want a specific edit to a sleeve, that editor is the better instrument. Blocksmith’s controls are coarser on purpose: hair, face, clothes, three extras, and colour swatches. They remake the whole figure. They are not a brush.
Blocksmith’s bet is the sentence and the install. “A knight in silver armour with a red cape” produces a sheet, a turnable preview, a copy in the Java skins folder, and a 64×64 PNG for Bedrock’s dressing room. The free path is offline. There is no account and no library of other people’s skins to browse, which is also a limitation: you cannot start from someone else’s published design, because Blocksmith does not have one.

Paint in Nova Skin when the sleeve has to be exact. Generate in Blocksmith when you want a character before you have opened an editor, and when the person using the computer is a child who should not need an account. The age rules for Blocksmith’s AI are on the parents page. The skin format is on the skins page.
